Falling Film Chillers
Precision thin film cooling systems delivering low-temperature chilling for process liquids with industry leading thermal efficiency. Engineered for dairy, food, seafood, and general industrial chilling applications.
In a falling film chiller, the liquid to be cooled flows as a thin, even film down the exterior surface of vertical plates. Refrigerant evaporates on the inner surface, absorbing heat directly through the thin plate wall from the falling liquid film on the plate surface.
The thin film principle is what makes this technology exceptionally efficient: As this thin film moves due to gravity making it a falling film technology exceptionally efficient heat transfer translates directly into higher evaporating temperatures, better compressor efficiency, and lower energy consumption compared to conventional flooded or direct expansion systems.
Calvion's falling film chillers are designed with uniform liquid distribution systems at the top header to ensure even film formation across all plates preventing dry spots that reduce performance or cause product damage in food grade applications.
Why Falling Film Chillers
Highest Thermal Efficiency
Thin film heat transfer coefficients are among the highest achievable in evaporative systems — delivering more cooling per unit of refrigerant and per square metre of heat transfer area than flooded or DX alternatives.
Low Refrigerant Charge
Falling film systems operate with significantly less refrigerant inventory than flooded evaporators — reducing leak risk, lowering refrigerant cost, and simplifying compliance with environmental regulations.
Gentle Product Handling
The smooth, gravity-driven film flow imposes minimal shear stress on the product. Critical for milk, and other shear-sensitive liquids where mechanical damage affects product quality.
Energy-Efficient Operation
Higher evaporating temperatures (compared to flooded systems at the same duty) mean the refrigeration compressor operates at a better COP — directly reducing electrical energy consumption.
Hygienic Construction
Electropolished stainless steel contact surface (available on request), sanitary connections, and fully drainable design for CIP cleaning. Available to 3-A and EHEDG hygienic design standards.
Compact Footprint
Vertical plate configuration with gravity-assisted distribution achieves very high thermal duty within a compact plan area — an important advantage in space-constrained dairy and food processing facilities.
